Editor option to change/create panels
Key Modules, Theme, and Distribution Used
Panolopy, Panels, Panelizer, Workbench moderation, Search API
Why these Modules, Theme, and Distribution were Chosen

We decided to use Panolopy for the integrated panels and in-place editor experiences.

The IDA site has a rather complex structure, where a lot of sub areas a managed by local editors, who wants to be able to modity each of their own pages, to give focus to the information they find important.

The final site has a series of standard content types (each with their own layout), but full freedom for the editors to change the layout and design of each page using the in-place editor and a series of specially developed boxes.

Each box be themed using three different styles (to keep the site coherent, but still allow flexibility). Some boxes are data driven, some are for user content and some are mainly design elements.

The frontpage is also a panels layout, but with a series of more flashy design elements hardcoded it. But most of it is still fully changable by the IDA editors.

Why Drupal Was Chosen
IDA wanted a very flexible system - both for the frontend design, site structure and the for making new content types. IDA choose Drupal because the though that it would give them the most freedom, and a great editorial experience.
Describe the Project (Goals, Requirements, and Outcome) is the danish language site of The Danish Society of Engineers, IDA - a professional body and trade union for technical and scientific professionals as well as students.

They have a large site, mainly split between the large body of legal and advice centered articles (the "Rådgivning" section), and a networking section ("Netværk"), which serves the needs of different member networking groups.

They needed a site that could both give a binding corporate identity, but also give each department and network group, the option top tailor their part of the site to their needs. Some examples are this page targeting leaders ("Leder") or this page about the Science Cup (an inventors competition).

Drupal with panels, build around a taxonomy based site structure, gave IDA the ability to do this.

The extensive usage of taxonomy and panels to support it, make it possible to build pages and include "Related pages" panels, that automatically has links to pages that may be of relevance. An example is this page about vacation ("Ferie").

This way we make it easy to have a consistent layout, look and feel without forcing the editor to stay within the template.

Also, we migrated them from Sharepoint, needless to say, they are very happy with the result :-)
